"Crying Out Loud" is the twenty-third episode from Season 6 of Modern Family, it aired on May 13, 2015.

Summary[]

The family is determined to make Alex celebrate her senior ditch day and Phil, Haley, and Luke forcefully take her out but end up at an unexpected detour. Claire is torn when she gets a job offer from a big hotel chain but feeling torn quickly gets replaced with feelings of confusion when she can't tell whether or not Jay really cares if she stays or goes. Cameron and Mitchell think that Lily isn't sensitive and with Manny groggy from painkillers after his wisdom teeth removal, Gloria seizes the moment to put a sabotage plan into effect to break Manny and his new girlfriend up.

Plot[]

It is Alex's Senior Ditch Day, but she has no desire to skip school, intending instead to make full use of the school's empty library to choose her college roommate. Phil rushes her and Haley to the car before revealing that he and Luke had tricked them and that they are going to celebrate the day, to Haley's delight and Alex's dismay. On their way to someway fun, Phil drives past an old theatre that he helped renovate many years ago. After breaking entry, Phil searches for and finds a slab of cement with young Haley and Alex's little footprints. Phil and Luke attempt to remove the slab backstage and take it home with them, while Haley and Alex argue at the front seating area. Haley and Alex then watch Phil and Luke humorously fail in their many attempts to remove the cement slab, and the two sisters slowly reconcile. Haley reveals that she is worried Alex won't contact her after she leaves for college, implying that she wants Alex to treat her not only as a sister/kin but also as a friend. Alex then assures her that she will need Haley's help to stay sane when she's surrounded by "Alexes" in college, and affirms she will never forget to stay in touch with her sister. The sisters then inadvertently recreate a moment from their childhood that Phil has been desperately trying to hold on to by saving that cement slab.

Gloria is disdainful of Manny's new girlfriend and uses his medication-induced memory loss after a dental surgery to trick him into believing she never showed up to be by his side, as she had promised. However, after her attempts to manipulate the situation are seen through by Manny, Gloria reveals why she doesn't like his girlfriend. Manny realizes in horror that his new girlfriend is a lot like Gloria, prompting Gloria to sign him up for a drama camp with the girl to sicken him out of the relationship. This upsets Manny, so Gloria relents, admitting that when Manny eventually grows up and finds a woman of his own, she would have to accept that.

Claire is offered a high-paying job by a hotel chain, a client of Pritchett's Closets, and she is unsure whether she should accept it or not. Whilst she wants the job because she is flattered by the offer, she is worried about upsetting Jay by leaving his company. Claire initially rejects the offer, but considers accepting it after Jay encourages her, but rejects it again when she sees Jay sniffling while looking at a photo of Claire and assumes he is saddened by her departure. When she realizes that he was just using her photo as a mirror to pluck his nose hairs, Claire decides to accept the job. Jay confronts her about her indecisiveness that's ruining the company image, and he successfully manages to convince her to stay when he stages a skit that depicts how he doesn't want her to leave, even calling her by her childhood nickname, which leaves her an emotional wreck.

Cameron and Mitchell are worried about Lily's inability to show feelings. Mitchell, believing it is because he doesn't show emotions often, watches The Bridges of Madison County and plans to be crying when Lily arrives home. After telling Cameron about his plan, Cameron gets emotional by the fact that a movie about being trapped in a loveless marriage is the only thing that makes Mitchell cry. This causes Cameron to start crying just as Lily gets home from school. Mitchell realizes that Lily is desensitized to normal emotions because Cam cries too frequently, so they talk to Lily. She proves to them she has feelings when the thought of her daddies being sick and not getting better consumes her, and that night she checks to ensure her daddies are still alive as they sleep.
