Career

Brenner was born and raised in poor areas of Philadelphia. Unlike many of the other children in his neighborhood, he managed to stay away from too much trouble. His sense of humor led to his immense popularity during his school years, winning Brenner the title of "Class President" every year. After high school he largely hung out on the street corners for two years, followed by two years in the army, serving in the 101st Airborne and as a cryptographer of the 595th Signal Corp in Boblingen, Germany. After being discharged, he attended Temple University where he majored in mass communications, graduating with honors.[2]

After making his national television debut on the The Tonight Show he became the show's most frequent guest with 158 appearances.[3] Since the majority of his jokes deal with current events, mostly political, he has become somewhat of a political pundit, and has been a guest on several news-oriented shows in the recent past, and was also ranked #53 on Comedy Central Presents: 100 Greatest Stand-Ups of All Time." Brenner has appeared more often on major TV Talk Shows than any other entertainer.[4]

Prior to beginning his standup career, he wrote, produced, and directed over a hundred made-for-TV documentaries, which garnered him many awards, including an Emmy[citation needed]. He is also the author of five books.[5] David has three children named Slade, Wyatt and Cole.[6]

David and the mother of his first son, Cole, fought a bitter custody battle lasting several years in The Supreme Court of New York. David finally won custody of their son Cole in 1994.

David married Elizabeth Slater of New York, the mother of his sons Slade and Wyatt, in the closing minutes of his Live from The Venetian Hotel in Las Vegas, Nevada HBO Special[7] on February 19, 2000. They got divorced a little over a year later and fought two bitter custody battles, both of which David won.

David was engaged to Olympian Pair Skater and skating Hall of Fame inductee, Tai Babilonia,[8] the female half of Tai & Randy.

In the 1989 romantic comedy Worth Winning (with Mark Harmon, Madeleine Stowe, Lesley Ann Warren) he had an appearance as a charity ball auctioneer.
