Some are born into greatness, some have it hurled at their face.

Lucas Philip "Luke" Dunphy is Claire and Phil Dunphy's third and youngest child, and is the younger brother of Haley and Alex Dunphy.

Biography

Luke was born in California, USA on November 28, 1998 and was conceived by Phil Dunphy and Claire Pritchett as their third and youngest child.

Personality

Luke is a rambunctious, playful, mischievous, and immature teenage boy who is often doing his own thing. He is also known for being a boy with low intelligence, which he has supposedly inherited from his father, who is not very smart either. This gives him innocence and leads him to not always understand the repercussions of his actions, which is clearly shown in "Coal Digger" when he announces at a family gathering that his mother thought Gloria was a gold digger, although he heard this as "Coal Digger". He is also thought to be a bit vacuous, because of many questionable actions, such as getting his head stuck in the banister and jumping on the trampoline wearing only underwear and a box on his head. Like his father, he is believed to have ADHD, as he repeatedly becomes distracted when he has to do something important. He is easily annoyed when people show intelligence: Whenever Manny says something with long words, he says 'You're making it lame again!'.

Luke starts high school and starts to distance himself a bit from his father, who he has always been extremely close with.

Luke loses his virginity this season, slightly upsetting Phil, this is similar to when Alex and Haley lost their virginity.

Luke isn't doing too well at school and his parents are afraid he won't get into college. In an attempt to look more appealing on college applications Luke runs for class president against Manny and wins the election. However Luke gets rejected from all of the colleges he applied to. Even when Phil and Claire bribe the principal of Phil's old college to let Luke in, he still decides not to go.

Luke also gets a job at Jay's country club where he makes quite a bit of money, mostly from tips.

Relationships

Family

Phil

TheFeud4

Luke has a special relationship with his father. They have more of a friendly relationship than a family one, as Phil mostly calls him "buddy". They almost have the same likes and dislikes and are most of the time seen doing something together, such as playing video games, watching TV, having adventures, playing sports, etc. However, they don't have exactly the same likes/dislikes, as in some episodes it has been shown that they share different ones:

  • In "Fizbo", it is revealed that Phil is afraid of clowns, while Luke likes them.
  • In "The Butler's Escape", Luke wants to quit magic but Phil can't accept it because Phil loves magic.
  • In "And One to Grow On", Phil wants to send Luke to a dance class, which he dislikes, because Phil says that he comes from a long line of dancing Dunphys.
  • Luke loves his father a lot and vice versa, as in many episodes it has been shown that his family loves him:
  • In "Phil on Wire", even though Phil is afraid of walking across a tight rope, Luke encourages him and he finally does it.
  • In "The Old Man & the Tree", when Phil attempts to meet his goal of traveling the length of home to Canada on a stair master, Luke first thinks that it's not a good idea, but later, he encourages his father to do it.

Claire

2x20-Someone-to-Watch-Over-Lily8

Unlike with Phil, Luke has a more familial relationship with his mother. He usually asks her help for something important, mostly for a school problem: homework, exams, projects, etc. While with Phil, for something about girls or to have fun with him. Also, when Luke does anything that makes Claire upset she gets mad at him, while Phil tries to bond with him and to not get mad at him. Despite this, Luke has demonstrated that he loves his mother in some episodes.

Manny Get Your Gun
When Claire thinks that Luke prefers his father before her, as he wanted to go with Phil to the restaurant for Manny's birthday instead of her, Luke reassures Claire that she is actually fun to make her feel better.

The Last Walt
Claire comforts Luke after he opens up about how he feels about Walt Kleezak dying, before this happens Claire thought that Luke showed no emotions because he wasn't dealing with it.

Snip
Luke first gets mad at Claire for embarrassing him at school, but later he realizes that he has been hard on her and gives her a rose to apologize.

Haley

Haley and Luke are happy

Haley is Luke's oldest sister, Haley and Luke don't have as many fights as she does with Alex, in fact Luke rearely ever fights with his sisters although they do call him names sometimes.

Truth Be Told
Alex and Haley have a little fun, and convince Luke that he was adopted by teasing him into thinking that Phil's old girlfriend Denise wanted to take him home. Meanwhile Luke is so terrified that it's a ruse that causes him to flee the room several times once Denise arrives.
Come Fly with Me
we see Haley and Luke playing a handclapping and singing game, and they seem very happy, in another scene, Jay and Gloria are climbing up their stairs as a bird hits their window, Gloria says that it's a bad sign that a bird smashed into a window, we come back to Luke and Haley who begin fighting immediately after Gloria says this.

Me? Jealous?
While Haley and Alex are fighting, Luke interferes to get them to stop and tells them that they are both bad big sisters to him. Luke's words make Alex and Haley remember their old habits when they were younger, such as dressing Luke up, something that he is not happy about.
Baby on Board
Luke reluctantly gives Haley her college acceptance letter and realizes that Luke was hiding it because he's gonna miss her (although Luke denied it). And sure enough, in "Schooled", when Haley is going to college, Luke is so sad about it that he puts on a mask when he says goddbye, to which Alex makes a comment that Luke is 'literally masking his emotions' demonstrating that he really loves his sister.

New Year's Eve
Luke invites Becca along with her cousin Joyce home. Luke plans to make out with her in his room, but Haley and Alex try to interrupt them several times, being the new adults around the house, until they just go in with laundry, Haley trying to be her Mother, tells Becca to leave, also then threatening to call her parents.

In "The Long Honeymoon" We see that Haley and Luke seem to get along really really well when Alex isn't around, they seem to be perfect children, the entire family seems to fit very perfectly together when Alex is building houses for the homeless, when Alex comes back we see that Haley and Luke immediately start to fight and Phil, Claire, Luke and Haley starts to feel stressed out again, but this only starts to happen when Alex comes back with a lot of stress on her mind. Phil and Claire then deny that Alex is the problem in the household. But it is quite evident that Alex seems to be the problem as when Alex leaves the house for a minute, Haley and Luke start being a happy family again and this is evidently broken when Alex comes back in the house.

Later on they dispute the situation and realise they were stupid for fighting, Luke then states what he was bullying his step-uncle about: Luke was bullying Manny about how his mother is a gold digger, which is something he heard his mother call Gloria, however he hears this as "coal digger", which raises suspscion for Gloria as to whether Claire really likes her.

But Manny comforts him saying that if wants to keep being cool, he has to change his style like him.

Lily

Luke was often seen to be jealous of all the attention Lily received for being the 'cute' one in the family instead of him. He and Manny used cookies that Claire made to try and lure Lily into a trap so she would spill the milk and get in trouble but Cam ended up being tricked instead. He liked to insult Lily for example he told Mitchell that Lily had no emotion in her eyes. The same thing happened after Joe was born, Lily became worried that he was the cute one and she was being replaced and Luke told her that they would talk.

Friendships

Manny

Walt

Walt Kleezak was the elderly neighbor of the Dunphys', Walt needed oxygen tanks to breathe, which Luke subsequently finds cool, it's revealed that Walt had fought in the war and had a love of playing video games with Luke:

Boys' Night
Walt makes his first appearance, Claire and Phil tell Luke not to play with him as they seem to find him creepy and think he isn't a nice person. When the Dunphy family are playing sports in their backyard, Claire bats the ball into Walts' backyard and they finish the game as Phil and Claire are afraid of going to his house to ask for it back nonetheless Luke ignores his parents and curiousity gets the better of him, as he goes around Walts' house and is the only member of his family to risk getting the ball back, Luke asks questions to Walt, at first Walt isn't very keen on Luke and doesn't trust him. Luke annoys Walt so much that he gives up and tels Luke to get his ball. Later on we see Luke come back home and tell his parents that he hung out with Mr. Kleezak in his house and Claire seems disappointed thinking that he is a creepy old man, but Luke tells them differently, as he has actually seen his persoanlity and not judged it. Claire tells Luke that he can't go back to Walts' house because he's weird. Luke then tells his parents that it's unfair and they don't know him as they're too afraid to talk to him. Claire and Phil then go over to tell him they are concerned about his friendship with their son, Walt gets offended that they think he is a pervert and he makes them leave his house. In the end, Walt stops by the Dunphy house and gives them Onions from his garden, he then tells them he used to be a fireman and he doesn't hurt kids. Feeling bad Claire and Phil invite him in but he doesn't come in. Seeing that Luke may be right and he is a kind, friendly old man and they judged him too quickly they accept him being a family friend.

Lifetime Supply
Luke asks Claire if he can invite Walt over, Claire asks Luke if he thinks it's weird to have an 85 year old best friend, Luke thinks it's cool that he's older than him and has been in the war. We later see Luke and Walt playing games on the Dunphys' couch, Phil is there with them, but it's only because of the news he thought he was going to receive and not because of supervising. When Luke takes a break for the toilet, Phil bonds with Walt over new he thinks is true: he is going to die, although Walt reassures him that the doctors told him he'd been dead 10 years ago and he is still alive.
Election Day
Phil gives Walt a ride to pick up his glasses. When Walts' tank starts to run out, Phil panics when he says that he doesn't have any more tanks at home and forgot to order them, and when he says that he needs to take his pill, which he does have, he says he needs it with food. So Phil drops him off at the polling station where they need to vote for Claire, Walt gets food to take with his pill first so that he'll be okay. Walt says that he doesn't like to vote for the government as they seem to screw him over, but since he had such a nice day with Phil, who says he thinks is a nice kid, he decides to vote for Claire, which goes against everything he believes in.
The Last Walt
In the opening scene, Phil and Claire have an "interview" where they give the news that Walt has died. Phil and Claire break the news to Luke, however Luke says that he is OK, and just wants to get back to his videogame. Later on Phil and Claire see Luke go into Walters' house, and think he's saying goodbye to his house and spirit. Phil and Claire then see Luke come out and take Walts' TV with him. A while later Luke brings Claire to Walts' house and Claire begins to get worried when Luke doesn't want to say a few words about how he felt about Walt and thinks that he isn't dealing with it in a healthy way. In the same scene Claire realises that she can't tell people someone has died without smiling, which is a coping mechanism for her, and Luke opens up about how he feels about Walt dying, Claire then comforts him although Luke still doesn't cry.

Trivia

Character Development

From Season 1 Luke is known to be very simple minded and quite dumb, doing things that could lead to disaster but never actually did. This doesn't change much, but it progresses throughout Season 5 and after.

The Verdict

While Phil tells him not to be so cynical Luke doesn't give up proving to his father that he is right and soon the audience is made to believe that it's evident that he is in fact right and the guy who Phil gave money to had conned him for $40 and a little extra. However at the end Luke is proved wrong when the guy tells the he is Dr. Monty the person who was in the hospital the day Luke was born as a midwife.
